USS VAMMEN CHAMPS WIN
In a crucial National League battle last Tuesday, 28 July, the USS VAMMEN
crew took on the USS TOLEDO in the Shipyard Service League game of the day. The USS VAMMEN hustled to a 6 to 0 victory,
gaining undisputed first place in the first round of play.
The VAMMEN team, supported by the brilliant three hit pitching of
"MAX MEIER", pushed accross three quick runs in the first inning and bettered the veteran cruiser crew.
After allowing four hits and five runs in the first two innings, ALLEN
of the TOLEDO was relieved by BROWN who pitched supurbly, limiting the VAMMEN to three hits and one run. HOYLE, third baseman
also played outstanding ball for the cruiser, hitting two singles in three trips to the plate.
Leading hitter of the day was FOX, long ball hitting first basement
of the DE. He netted a homer and a single in three official trips. Supporting him was DELOZIER, second baseman, with
two singles; JOHNSON, third baseman, hitting a tripple, and PATTERSON, catcher, banging out a double.
Both teams turned out outstanding performances, defensively with
sensational plays sprinkled throughout the game. The teams meet again in the second round 24 Aug at 3 p.m.
